G’day, I’m Holden. I’m an award-winning author from Western Australia, and my contemporary fiction books are known for being raw, earthy, blokey and heartfelt. I grew up in a regional Midwest town: you can take the boy from the country, but not the country from the boy. I mostly write stories of working-class, blue-collar gay and bisexual men from the country, with themes of masculinity, sexuality, mental health, found family, love, and hope.
Outside of writing, I’m an amateur bodybuilder / gym rat, and spend six days a week working out. I mostly work as a full-time author, but when writing money runs short (in this business, we have big years and quiet years), you can find me occasionally working as a manual labourer. I also like going for walks in the sun, playing footy (socially), watching footy (AFL - I barrack for Collingwood), reading, and playing video games. I’ve been called a revhead as I own a modded V8: my pride and joy is a black 2009 Holden SS ute named Phantom.
I live in Perth’s far north with my husband, who is also a writer.
Why subscribe to Loose Units?
I’m aware times are tough, and everyone I know is juggling multiple subscriptions to TV, music, book, and other services - so I’ve enabled a free subscription option on this Substack. You can join me here at no cost. A free subscription will give you access to a limited number of posts on this Substack.
If you can afford a paid subscription, I’ve set the price low, and this directly supports my writing career and helps me to write and finish novels faster for you to read.
A paid subscription gives you:
full access to all posts and the full publication archives;
the ability to leave comments on my posts and be a part of my community here;
exclusive access to DM me “Ask Holden” questions about any aspect of my career, books or their themes, which I intend to answer publicly on the blog; and
exclusive access to a private, monthly behind-the-scenes post on what I’ve been up to, and where each book or TV project is currently at.
